Secrets to Selling

Essential skills to maximise profit

There are certain skills that every salesperson needs to have, with the ability to close a sale being perhaps the most important. The professional skills of a sales assistant need to be honed and developed. While each salesperson has a different approach, there are still some basic principles that should be followed. Having a system in place is essential to increase your profits  and meet customer needs. Every business owner needs to learn sales skills and closing sales techniques.

Converting leads that have been generated out of advertising, direct mail, referrals, joint ventures and other sources into paying customers is both an art and a science. Once you master this skill you will be able to maximise the return on the resources you have invested in your chosen marketing strategies.

All your marketing efforts will come to nothing unless you have a proven system in place to convert your leads into prospects!

The first step to closing a sale is making an effort to understand your customer, and then showing them that you understand their needs. Only then can you offer your customer a product that will meet their customer needs. Your customers want to be sure that they are getting value for money. It may seem obvious, but the only way you can know what your customer wants is by asking lots of questions. But not just any questions, you will need to ask lots of relevant questions. Depending on your business, these questions will be informed by the next step you want the customer to make: you may simply want them to make an appointment so you can give them a quote, or you may want to make the sale there and then.

Often the customer may have complex needs or even more than one need, so you may need to follow different lines of questioning, or move through the questioning process more than once to establish exactly what it is that your customer is looking for.

Once you have gathered information about the customer's needs, given your customer a solution that will satisfy their needs, and qualified that your customer is interested in proceeding, you need to begin gathering information about any additional needs your customer may have. This process continues until you close the sale.
