Are You Ready For An Exciting Era In Australian Online Marketing?
Instead of telling you how iQuantum came to exist, we thought we'd share the history of online marketing as we see it. We feel that our perception of how things started is a good indicator of what the future holds for our client's and how to understand your own position online.
Essentially, the Internet is a consequence of highly intelligent programmers who wanted to create a tool to collaborate with their peers. The Internet has always been about sharing and open dialogues surrounding technologies and information. Although the Internet was conceived through the efforts of professors and professional research programs it was the idea to join all of the existing networks within a global network that created the World Wide Web.
When people ask us about social media and web 2.0 we try to explain that these are not entirely new, but reincarnations of tools and technology that has always existed online. Once these technologies are simple enough for almost anyone to use they become a product or online brand. Most of the time using Internet technologies is free, but there is a cost in building and creating tools which requires commercialisation. Additionally, people have always shared stories and communicated with others about their experiences. The activity and behaviour isn't new- just the technology.
During the early 1990's the Internet appeared to be an untapped resource for new and exciting ways to sell products and services. This combined with the popularity of electronic mail or email meant that consumers could be communicated with in new ways, and thus, spam was born. Between the dot-com bubble and spamming the Internet didn't appeal to many traditional businesses. Once online businesses began to crash most offline companies congratulated themselves for staying out of it.
After the crash, web based businesses took a more practical approach to how they performed transactions and earned revenue. In February 2007, a Web Server Survey found 108,810,358 distinct websites, but it's nearly impossible to know exactly how many websites exist. A recent study anticipates by 2011, 22% of the Earth's population will surf the Internet regularly. The report says 1.1 billion people have regular Web access.
Over 75% of online Australian's spend their time on Facebook, 70% visit YouTube and 65% go to Wikipedia for research information. In 2009, 23% of Australian's read messages on Twitter. There are approximately 14 million Australian's online each month. It is now more evident than ever that online marketers understand how they can tap into this trend and use it as a way to engage their clients, customers, stakeholders and the general Internet population.
