Search, Search Engine Optimisation, SEO – what does it really mean. Wikipedia definition - it is the process of improving the visibility of a website or web page in search engines via natural or unpaid search results. Were the real contention comes along is how to influence these results.
The essence of the exercise is to have visibility for search terms with high volumes of traffic, which are relevant to your business, product or service. But there is not much point in being first in Google if your content is poor and does not match the expectations of the visitor.
The key to good SEO strategy is to determine which keywords (or phrases) to go after based on the strength of the competition and the present relative position of your site. You are better off have a small number or targeted visitors that match what you have to offer than spending a fortune to rank for a term that is only partially relevant.
You are probably starting to see why, thinking about SEO after the site has been built just won’t bring results. SEO needs to be considered as part of the strategy, it should assist in developing the sitemap, and of creating the content. Doing SEO afterwards can be dangerous, allowing a firm or individual to modify your site without really knowing what they are up too, changing content without your approval - the promise of first position in Google by some snake oil salesman; just is a bit silly really.
Creating content that will engage with visitors and make a connection with them is what you should be aiming for. Doing this in context with your SEO strategy is worth consideration, but it is not a must have for every business. The size of the competition, the consumption of media by your target market will assist in working out the Traffic part of the strategy.
