Rock Solid Foundations Create Success
Developing your business model
Your business model is the focussed and unique plan for your business and is an absolute essential if you want to be even moderately successful. Without the fundamental building blocks in place you are building your house (also known as your business) on sand, and you will be unable to achieve the outcome you desire.
First up, you'll need to analyse your business environment; the outsides, the insides, the upsides and downsides all need to be analysed. This business system analysis will consist of understanding and critically evaluating the key trends of the industry you are operating in, and the general demographic, socio-cultural, economic technological, legal and environmental trends occurring in the country you are operating in, that may or may not affect your business. This will provide you with invaluable insights into your business' external environment. The internal analysis will analyse immediate business factors. It should involve a competitor analysis, a customer review, and a marketing review. The internal business system analysis will provide you with an objective snapshot of your business abilities and inabilities.
From there comes the SWOT analysis that summarises the current business strengths and weaknesses from the internal analysis and the potential opportunities and threats available from the external analysis. A SWOT analysis gives you the tools to make strategic decisions and allows you to see which business strengths to use to exploit the opportunities occurring in your environment and to overcome potential threats.
From the SWOT, you get a better understanding of your business options and the strengths you should use to exploit these options. Once you have decided what to do and when to do it, the nitty-gritty of your strategic plan needs to be sorted out.
This means segmenting the potential audience, targeting a market, and positioning your product and brand in a desirable manner in the minds of your target market. It also means identifying a unique selling proposition (also known as the USP) so that you stand out from the crowd and are remembered for your uniqueness. The USP is quite simply, your unfair advantage.
Undertaking such an business system analysis is a daunting task, but it is necessary if want to succeed. However, it is not for the faint-hearted and your best bet would be to a business model consultant. iQuantum have the experience to advise you on how to come up with a focused business model that will get you where you want to be.
